JOHN, Bishop of York, founded a monastery on the site where BEVERLEY MINSTER stands. KING ATHELSTAN in 937, on his way to fight the Scots, left his army to vist the tomb of ST JOHN. The GOTHIC CHURCH is one of the best NORTH EAST VISTOR ATTRACTIONS, in the EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE and is a centre for NORTH EAST CHRISTIAN WORSHIP in the UK. It is a place of pilgrimage and continues to be a place of PRAYER and WORSHIP at the heart of the CHRISTIAN community in the EAST RIDING of YORKSHIRE. BEVERLEY MINSTER is not just a YORKSHIRE VISITOR ATTRACTION, but a place of worship to rejoice in Christ, a community of love to reflect in Christ and a light to the world to reveal Christ. ST JOHN was one of the leaders of the Northumbrian Church, after conversion to CHRISTIANITY, and was for a time the Bishop of Hexham He was canonized by the Pope in 1037 as ST JOHN of BEVERLEY. THE MINSTER has 68 MISERICORDS - the largest number of any church in the country and are fine examples of MEDIEVAL CARVING.
